ABOUT Kisho Kakutani
Kakutani creates works that function as “devices” to evoke landscapes within the viewers mind. The series “Frosted Window” and “Curtain,” which depict blurred sections of scenery, intentionally mimic frosted glass windows and curtains in their blurred areas, as their titles suggest, leaving room for the viewers imagination.
While majoring in Japanese painting at university, he transitioned to his current acrylic painting style during his studies.
Having frequently watched tokusatsu hero shows as a child, Kakutani later developed an interest in tokusatsu background art, which he acknowledges influenced his own work to some extent. While the landscapes that serve as motifs for his pieces originate from casual snapshots taken with his smartphone, they possess a universality shared with the “landscapes that dont linger in the viewers memory” found in tokusatsu backgrounds.
Other series include “Separated Image,” and in recent years, he has been working on the “Fog” series.
