This is a painting of a single tree and a forest on a hill in a snowy landscape. It was a quiet scene, as if the snow had silenced all sound. Perhaps because I was dressed warmly due to the cold, I felt enveloped by the scenery, as if nothing else existed beyond that moment. I tried to capture that sensation in the painting.
When I paint the sky, I often end up drawing the moon. Since I was a child, I have always watched the moon follow me even when I was in a car. Now I understand why the moon follows me, but for me, the moon is a symbol of something unchanging, or rather, something eternal.
I’m not sure if the moon was actually out, but I think I painted it as one aspect of the mental landscape, imagining that it might have been like that.

ABOUT Haruna Niiya

Concept of Artwork

The motifs I depict are the small joys I encounter while observing nature around me. Using a silkscreen, I slowly build up the image through repeated plate-making and printing, and the small joys I felt take on images and reappear as new landscapes. It is a very personal and small thing to be able to love the creatures and nature around us, but to be able to notice this is a very happy thing. I paint pictures and make things while searching for what the richness of life means to me.
