Artist’s Comment:
I painted this with the theme of time. Looking back on my own time, I realized that I spend a lot of time alone, so I decided to paint the scenery I saw when I was alone.
When I paint my own pictures, there are moments when I feel my loneliness being healed. Both the pigeon and I were alone at that moment, and we seemed lonely and sad, but as time passed, I began to think that was a misunderstanding.
I recall that the world is connected through nature, and I think that true loneliness may not actually exist in this world. The title “Solitude” has the meaning of being alone or lonely, but it also has the meaning of being positive and what one desires.

ABOUT Haruna Niiya

Concept of Artwork

The motifs I depict are the small joys I encounter while observing nature around me. Using a silkscreen, I slowly build up the image through repeated plate-making and printing, and the small joys I felt take on images and reappear as new landscapes. It is a very personal and small thing to be able to love the creatures and nature around us, but to be able to notice this is a very happy thing. I paint pictures and make things while searching for what the richness of life means to me.
