The work shows overall discoloration and cannot be described as being in good condition, yet it is a refined monochrome piece characteristic of Ben Nicholson’s keen sense of style. The trapezoidal plate appears to feature a vessel motif, and the subtle twist in its overall design adds an intriguing touch.
Burn marks across the entire sheet, stains in places, damage to the paper in several areas of the layout.

ABOUT Ben Nicholson
Ben Nicholson (1894–1982) was a British painter widely regarded as one of the leading figures of modern British art. He was influenced by the structural approach of Cézanne, the Cubism of Picasso and Braque, and the Neoplasticism of Mondrian, and produced numerous abstract works. He married Barbara Hepworth, a pioneering abstract sculptor who, alongside Henry Moore, played a key role in shaping British modern sculpture. Together with Hepworth and Moore, Nicholson formed Unit One, a group that helped propel abstract art in Britain. His compositions, constructed with simplified forms, light lines, and soft, subdued colors, are filled with a quiet and refined beauty.
