This work was originally hand-colored, but most of the color has now faded. The tape applied over the handwritten signature on the back, as well as other details, suggest that the previous framing was rather careless. Having transitioned from the advertising industry—whose purpose is to “communicate to the masses”—to life as an artist, Warhol’s works were initially conceived as art that the public could easily own. While the condition of this piece cannot be described as good, it is precisely this that imparts a palpable sense of history.
