ABOUT NAMBATA Tatsuoki

A pioneer of abstract painting in postwar Japan.
Born in Asahikawa, Hokkaido, in 1905. The following year, his family moved to Tokyo. In 1913, he became acquainted with Kotaro Takamura at his new residence, who would influence him throughout his life. He studied at the Taiheiyo Art Institute and was accepted into the National Art Association in 1929. He studied under Riichiro Kawashima and formed the “Form Exhibition” with his colleagues. In 1937, he participated in the founding of the Free Artists Association, and after leaving the association in 1959, he focused on solo exhibitions.

In the early days of his career, he depicted scenes from Greek sculpture and ancient times, but after the war, he was inspired by Cubism and Art Informel and turned to abstract expressionism. He established his own unique style of abstract painting, particularly after 1970.
Hailed as a “poet of form,” he pursued the possibilities of abstract expressionism throughout his life with poetic colors and delicate lines.
