ABOUT Karl Blossfeldt

Karl Blossfeldt (1865-1932) was a German sculptor, teacher, photographer, and botanist. His vast array of close-up photographs of plants were taken with a homemade camera initially for teaching purposes. His immediate, sculptural, decorative, and architectural images of plants greatly influenced the Surrealists and New Objectivity* .

*New Objectivity (German: Neue Sachlichkeit)
An art movement that emerged in Germany after World War I. Reacting against the subjective expressionism that expressed the inner life of the individual, the artists satirized politics, society, and customs with an objective viewpoint like that of a journalist, and painted works with extreme exaggeration of realism.
