ABOUT Tomokazu Matsuyama
He is one of the artists WALLS TOKYO has been focusing on. After graduating from the Faculty of Economics at Sophia University, he went on to graduate at the top of his class from the Pratt Institute for Communication and Design, a private art graduate school in New York City, before moving to New York to pursue his career as an artist.
He has a unique worldview in which he deconstructs Japanese motifs with pop colors, and the delicate matiere of his characteristic layering stands out the closer you look at his works.
His solo exhibition was held at "Harbor City" in Hong Kong, one of the largest commercial facilities in Asia.
Every year, a group of artists hold a public art exhibition at "Four Courts," the main entrance to Harbor City. Last year, a Dutch artist created a sensation when he floated a giant "Dava Duck" in the harbor.
This year, Matsuyama became the first young artist to be selected to create a sculpture, "Sky Is The Limit," a 6.5-meter-high stainless steel sculpture that will be displayed in front of the main entrance of the facility.
Swizz Beatz, husband of Alicia Keys and a renowned HipHop producer, is a well-known collector. In recent years, his works have been included in the Microsoft Collection and the Dubai Royal Collection, and he has been expanding his activities by giving lectures at Harvard University, which is sure to attract the attention of collectors around the world.
Many of his published works are purchased directly by overseas collectors, and it is difficult to obtain his works circulating in Japan.
