ABOUT Gerhard Richter
German painter. He is one of the most remarkable and important artists in the world today, and has been called "Germanys finest painter. Since the 1960s, he has continued to experiment with photo paintings, color charts, and abstract paintings in which layers of colors resonate with each other, while consistently pursuing the essence of painting. At Sothebys London 2012, the abstract Abstraktes Bild sold for £21.32 million, the highest price ever paid for a work by a living artist.

1932 Born in Dresden, former East Germany
1961 Entered Art University of Dusseldorf
1964 First solo exhibitions in Munich and Dusseldorf
1971 For more than 15 years, he has held a professorship at the University of Arts Düsseldorf.
1972 Exhibited "48 Portraits" and "Atlas" throughout Europe; exhibited at the German Pavilion, Venice Biennale; Documenta V
1986 Touring retrospective in Dusseldorf, Berlin, Bern, and Vienna
1988 Retrospective exhibitions at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, the Art Institute of Toronto, etc
1991 Retrospective at the Tate Gallery, London
