Convenience Chain
Akira Fujimoto
2022.9.28 wed – 10.22 sat

Walls Tokyo is pleased to present "Convenience Chain," the first exhibition with Akira Fujimoto since the gallery relocation.
At first glance, the painting appears abstract, with splashes and drips of paint. However, upon closer inspection, one notices that some of the overlapping layers of paint are not natural phenomena, such as the top and bottom being swapped, and the strokes are twisted. The dynamic and delicate nature of the paintings gives the viewer a sense of discomfort, as if time has been artificially suspended by coagulating energy. These elements of the work remind us that recent climate change is not simply a natural phenomenon, but that human society is involved in the factors that cause it.
Although Fujimoto has been pursuing paintings based on physical phenomena, his new challenge with artificial drawing collages in this exhibition may be connected to his art activities, which have been posing questions about social phenomena and the environment. We hope you will take this opportunity to view Akira Fujimoto′s first solo exhibition at WallsTokyo.
- Convenience Chain -
Akira Fujimoto The "Replacement" series, which comprises the "Convenience Chain" exhibition, is a collage of drawings.
After drying, the parts of natural phenomena scattered with paint are peeled off from the film and pasted on the canvas in a weaving manner, disregarding the chronological order. The characteristics of the work are not arranged in a compositional manner toward a completed image, but rather, each part is connected to the next as it sees fit, and the picture is created as if it were growing. The act of creating uncontrollable pictures in this closed, square world of tableau seems to depict how we, who live in a closed world, replace natural energy with comfort and continue to cut and paste in an uncontrolled manner. And even though we are constantly bombarded by unwanted and overwhelming side effects from the environment, and even though we keep warning each other of their cause and effect, we cannot stop the chain of our pursuit of comfort. We have no image of perfection.
