「CHANNEL」
Masaya Tani
2019.3.27 wed - 4.27 sat

WALLS TOKYO is pleased to announce a solo exhibition of Masaya Tani. The title of this exhibition, "CHANNEL," suggests the artist's attempt to capture the landscape around him from multiple, multifaceted perspectives. Tani depicts human-made natural substitutes such as artificial flowers and parks, undulating lines and outlines, and psychedelic abstractions that seem to repeatedly multiply. Neon-colored paintings of overgrown trees and self-satisfied flowers. They have a strangely artificial texture, as if they have been subjected to excessive image processing. The patchwork of images in his recent works is like a landscape that can be swiped through in our daily lives, or like the act of trying to find the "real" by wading through a flood of images. The world in which fact and fiction are intricately intertwined becomes even more indivisible through technology, and the gap between the "cheapness" of artificially created nature and the "sublimity" of nature itself disappears. This perspective is not unrelated to the fact that Tani himself has been conscious of the pictorial expression that lies beyond the use of editing software. In the "reality" that rural towns are rapidly depopulating and places that were once full of vitality are decaying, the gadget in one's hand continues to incessantly update the "now. Whether natural or man-made, they continue to change and possess uncontrollable, mighty power. When we realize this, a dazzling landscape may suddenly rise before our eyes. This exhibition, his second solo show at WALLS TOKYO, features approximately 15 new works. In addition to the new series, the exhibition will also feature works from his previous series.
