About

Toeko Tatsuno

Toeko Tatsuno’s prints and drawings are based on a series and repetition of grid and stripe lines inspired by tile walls, and the figuration created by the strength and slight blurring of the line drawing, and she boldly challenges the return of the medium of painting, while also paying attention to the post-minimalist trend of the time. She pursues an original expression of characteristic motifs (arabesque, diamond shape with a chain of rectangles, square, sphere, cloud shape, etc.) painted in the screen, using robust and thick textures to depict organic shapes in rich colors. Her original colors and rich textures, combined with a sense of three-dimensionality and gravity, create a spatial form that could only be realized in painting. In 1995, at the age of 45, the youngest artist ever to hold a solo exhibition at the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo, he was awarded the 46th Minister of Education’s Art Encouragement Prize for New Artists the following year and the 54th Mainichi Art Award in 2013, He is one of the leading contemporary painters of today.
