The woodblock prints in the tatami room are “Shin-hanga (new prints)” by Hasui Kawase.
With its modern interpretation, “Shin-hanga”
rejuvenated the art form which were
in decline during the Meiji period.
Although strictly speaking, it is different
from Ukiyo-e woodblock prints,
it has strong roots in the long-standing art form.
“Shin-hanga” is well known for
being a favorite of Apple founder Steve Jobs.
In his teens, Steve Jobs was so enamored
with Hasui Kawase’s work that was displayed
at his friend’s house that he even asked
his friend’s mother,
“I want you to share the prints with me.”
Ukiyo-e was originally intended
for the enjoyment of the common folk.
“Shin-hanga”, which draws on that trend,
has added renovations that match
the times while preserving tradition.
Likewise, it can be said Yanaka’s urban
development has also skillfully incorporated
new ideas and trends.

畳席に飾ってある木版画は、
川瀬巴水による「新版画」です。
「新版画」とは明治期に衰退の一途を
たどっていた浮世絵版画を
新しい時代の解釈を加えて再興したものです。
厳密には浮世絵版画とは違いますが、
ベースにあるものは浮世絵版画です。
新版画はアップルの
創設者スティーブ・ジョブズも
愛好したことでよく知られています。
10代のころ、ジョブズさんは友人の家に
飾ってあった川瀬巴水の浮世絵に熱中し
「版画を分けてほしい」と
友人の母に訴えるほどだったといいます。
浮世絵は元々庶⺠が楽しむためのものでした。
その流れを汲む新版画は、
伝統を守りつつも
時代にあったリノベーションを加え、
新しいものを上手に取り入れてきた、
谷中のまちづくりそのものだといえるでしょう。
